What Is OSBackup?

OSBackup is an online backup service. The service is used to back up your critical files and documents over the Internet to a secure server.

Why use OSBackup?

The most important reason is that OSBackup can be configured to automatically back up your data every day, providing you with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that all your critical files are safely backed up. A large percentage of homes and businesses perform either infrequent backups or no backups at all. In addition, any backup strategy should involve an off-site copy of your data. In the case of fire, flood or theft you will have a safe copy of your data stored at another location.

How does it work?

When you sign up for an account, you download some software onto your computer. This software will automatically backup the files that you specify on a schedule that you specify. The files are transmitted securely across the Internet and stored on a OSBackup server.

How long does it take to do a backup?

The time it takes for a backup will vary based on your connection speed and the amount of data to be backed up. Sebsequent backups take less time to complete. For example, a typical computer with 500 Megabytes of data to backup on a high-speed connection should only take about 2 minutes.

Do I need high-speed internet access?

No, you can back up your data with a regular dial-up modem, but it will take longer to complete each backup. After the first backup is complete, each subsequent backup will take a lot less time. If you have a substantial amount of information to backup, please contact support@osbackup.ca to notify us of this. We may suggest that you mail your data on a CD prior to backing up the first time. This will speed your backups up a lot.

How safe is my information?

All information is transmitted over the internet with encryption and is protected on the OSBackup server with a password.

Your files and compressed and then encrypted during transmission to OSBackup's server. The files are encrypted using 128bit encryption. However, your files are stored in unencrypted on the OSBackup Server. This enables OSBackup Administrators to assist you with restores. However, we will not look at any of your files unless you request it in writing. If you require more security, you could encrypt the files on your own computer and then back up the encrypted files. How Much Does It Cost?

The cost is a monthly fee based on the amount of storage space that you use on OSBackup's server. Please remember that archives and log files are also stored on the Server and are calculated as part of your disk usage. When you set up your account you select a quota or account size. If you go over your quota, your account will be automatically upgraded to the next size. You'll be notified on a daily basis of how much storage space you occupy on the Server.

Can I back up everything on my computer?

No. Backing up everything on your computer would take a long time and the cost would be very high since all the files on your computer could total several gigabytes. Instead, the OSBackup service is designed to back up your important data files. In the event of a computer crash, you would reinstall all your software from the original disks or CDs, then use OSBackup to restore your data.

How Much History Can I Keep?

Your backups are archived on a daily basis and stored for one week. That means you can go back to any day of the past week to restore a file. Additionally, the last 4 Saturday archives are stored. That way, if you can go back up to 4 weeks ago to retrieve a file.

Can I Try The Service?

We are sure you'll like the service, but if for any reason you don't, notify us by email at accounts@osbackup.ca within 7 days of your sign up and we'll remove your account and won't charge you a thing.
